The ECO-Mega Bat Detector/Recorder

This detector is a time expansion machine with heterodyne mode, and combined digital recorder. It uses a wide band capacitor type ultrasonic microphone covering the frequency range 12 kHz to 160 kHz.  It is designed for professional ecologists.

A second microphone allows voice commentary. Total memory size is 25.6 seconds at a sampling rate of 409.6 kHz. Time expansion and heterodyne signals can be monitored together or separately.

This paragraph contains a brief description of the product ...

Specification

Timetag: This places an identifying tone signal into memory at half-hour intervals. Ideal for monitoring bat activities over many hours of time. Just note the recording start time. Activity is then known within the half hour markers. Subsequent software analysis can show bat call numbers (function of bat activity) with time, as well as species identification

Splash reject: When trying to record ultrasonic bat calls in mines, caves, tunnels etc. where there are falling water droplets, they can produce ultrasonic signals, which will be recorded by a detector. In fact some recordings will consist mainly of water splashes. The ECO-Mega has water splash rejection logic with some 90% rejection.

Back to back recording: With the automatic record facility, recordings are “back to back” this means memory is not wasted recording noise signals. Bat call recordings are in adjacent time slots or “back to back” with minimum noise between calls, making for efficient use of precious memory.
This makes call analyses much faster than using an external tape recorder.
Social calls can also be recorded by selecting larger time slots

Microphone: An internal microphone allows commentary facility using a press to talk switch operation.

Heterodyne: Can record heterodyne signals. Useful for measuring call repetition rates, and investigating constant frequency (CF) bat calls.
The FM chirps at beginning and end of CF call can be measured.
A three-digit display indicates precise tuning frequency.

Selectable Time Expansion Division: Since recorded calls are held in memory they can be played back at any time, at any selected speed of +10, +32, or +64. Divide by 64 is useful for analysing very high frequency bat calls. It is also used to playback commentary & heterodyne recordings.

Battery Backup: The solid state digital memory has an integral battery which can “hold up” memory contents. Recorded signal can be maintained in memory for several months, and played back when required.

Memory pointer: A memory pointer can be adjusted using the forward/reverse switch, to set record or playback memory positions. Operating the switch in any given direction for more than three seconds causes a higher speed update.

External power supply: When data gathering over many hours the Eco-Mega can be powered from an external battery or power supply within a range of 4V DC to 13V DC. Ideal for 6V or 12V batteries.

External Tape Recorder: There is a stereo jack socket for supplying the detector output signal to an external tape recorder (100mV rms into 600W) on one stereo jack channel. The other channel monitors the ultrasonic sensor signal.

Calibration: There is an internal calibration facility. Useful for comprehensive checking of detector performance. These calibration signals can also be used for checking an external tape recorder.
